Commemorating the 20th anniversary of permanent residency (F-5 visa) in Korea, this study examines the current status of permanent immigration system in Korea and seeks directions of policy improvement. It attempts to analyze the permanent immigration system by migration pathways, considering the ways in which the permanent immigration system has developed over the years. Using the data from interviews with permanent residents and applicants for permanent residency, this study identifies the difficulties facing them in acquiring permanent residency and explores the meaning of permanent residency from their perspectives. Finally, policy suggestions are made based on the opinions of experts in the field.
